The Pomeranian Personality: What Is This Little Dog Really Like?
Pomeranians are bright little dogs. They learn quickly and enjoy having something to do. Puzzle toys, short training sessions, and little games around the house keep them happy ...
I've always had a soft spot for small dogs with big personalities. Maybe it's because Rubi, my Cockapoo, seems convinced she's the size of a Labrador. So when a friend recently brought home a tiny Pomeranian pup, I found myself curious about what makes these little fluffballs tick. If you've ever wondered what life with a Pom is really like, you're in the right place.
Tiny Body, Huge Character
The first thing most people notice about a Pomeranian is, well, the fluff. That double coat makes them look like a walking teddy bear. But spend five minutes with one and you'll realise their personality is just as big as their coat.
Poms are bold. They strut around like they own the place, often completely unaware that they weigh less than a bag of sugar. A friend of mine has a Pom called Biscuit who barks at Great Danes on walks. Biscuit has no idea he's the underdog. He genuinely believes he's in charge.
That confidence is part of their charm, though it does mean you'll need to put some work into training early on.
They're Smarter Than They Look
Pomeranians are bright little dogs. They learn quickly and enjoy having something to do. Puzzle toys, short training sessions, and little games around the house keep them happy.
Without enough mental stimulation, they can get bored. And a bored Pom will find their own entertainment. Usually something you'd rather they didn't, like rearranging your sock drawer or barking at leaves.
Rubi has her own quirks, but I've noticed that dogs with a job, even a silly one, are calmer and happier. The same goes for Poms. Teach them a trick. Give them a puzzle. They'll thank you for it.

Loyal to Their People
These little dogs bond deeply with their humans. They love being close, following you from room to room, and curling up on your lap at the end of the day.
Some Poms pick one favourite person and stick to them like glue. Others spread the love around the whole family. Either way, they're affectionate and enjoy being part of the action.
That said, they can be a bit wary of strangers. Early socialisation helps a lot. Introduce them to new people, sounds, and places while they're young. It makes a big difference later on.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Poms are vocal. They'll let you know when someone's at the door, when the post arrives, or when a bird dares to land in the garden. If you live in a flat or have neighbours close by, this is worth thinking about.
They also need regular grooming. That gorgeous coat tangles easily, so a good brush a few times a week is essential. It's a nice bonding moment too, if your Pom enjoys it. Not all of them do. Biscuit tolerates brushing like a grumpy teenager being asked to tidy his room.
And despite their size, they still need daily walks and playtime. A short stroll around the block isn't quite enough. They've got energy to burn.
Final Thoughts
Pomeranians are funny, fearless, and full of life. They're not just handbag dogs. They're proper little companions with minds of their own. If you're thinking about welcoming one into your home, be ready for big personality in a small package. You'll never be bored, that's for sure.
